Safety tips for buyers and sellers
Last updated: July 2026
Most transactions on SellMyCar Qatar go smoothly. These tips will help you avoid the small number that don’t.
For buyers
- Inspect the car in person. Meet in a public, well-lit place. Bring a friend. Prefer daytime.
- Verify the Istimara (registration). Confirm the seller’s name matches the ID, and that the chassis and engine numbers on the car match the document.
- Get an independent check. Have the car inspected at a reputable workshop or through an authorised inspection centre before you pay.
- Pay through your bank — bank transfer, cashier’s cheque, or in person at a Traffic Department office during transfer. Avoid large cash amounts.
- Never pay a deposit before seeing the car. Anyone asking for money to “reserve” or “ship” a car sight-unseen is almost certainly a scam.
- Watch for red flags: prices well below market, seller “abroad”, WhatsApp-only contact, urgency, pressure to move off the platform.
For sellers
- Screen enquiries. Signed-in buyers are attributed to a real account, but still confirm intent before sharing your home address.
- Meet at a public location. Never hand over keys before payment clears.
- Only accept cleared funds. Bank transfer confirmed by your bank, or transfer at the Traffic Department. Reject cheques from strangers.
- Complete the transfer of ownership at the Traffic Department the same day payment is received. Until the transfer is registered, you remain legally responsible for the vehicle.
- Keep records. Photograph the odometer, chassis plate, ID and signed transfer papers.
